An 8-inch blade with a 2-inch serrated section gives the Rothco Ka-bar Tanto Knife a substantial cutting surface with two distinct edge styles. For an outdoor knife, that combination offers useful flexibility: the plain edge handles controlled slicing, while the serrated portion provides a sawing action for tougher or fibrous material. A supplied Kydex sheath fits a standard web belt, keeping the knife separate from the loose equipment in your pack.
Blade finish and edge details
The blade has an epoxy powder-coated finish and a listed hardness of HRC 56–58. Hardness is one factor that influences how a knife balances edge retention with ease of sharpening; it is useful information when comparing blades, rather than a complete measure of cutting performance. The edge is sharpened to a specified 20-degree angle and buff-polished.
The serrations occupy only part of the blade, leaving a longer plain-edge section for cuts where a continuous edge is preferable. If you regularly work with different materials during camping or outdoor tasks, having both edge types on one knife can reduce the need to switch tools.
Oval handle and belt-mounted sheath
The handle is made from Kraton G elastomer and has an oval profile, rather than a round shape. That profile gives your hand a reference for the blade's orientation as you grip it. A carbon steel guard and powdered-metal butt cap complete the handle assembly.
For carrying, the Kydex sheath accommodates a standard web belt. This is a useful detail when planning a field setup: the knife can be carried on your belt instead of taking up space inside a gear bag.
