Tactical Jackets
Rothco tactical jackets are built for people who stay on the move: wind-blocking soft shells, layered 3-in-1 systems, a waterproof hard shell and rugged canvas work jackets.
The Special Ops Soft Shell Jacket leads the range. Rothco's three-layer soft shell fabric blocks wind and resists wet weather while letting moisture escape, and it adds a fleece lining, a fleece-lined collar, underarm ventilation zippers, a stowable hood, zipped pockets and patch attachment points. It comes in sizes from XS to 8XL in black, coyote brown, olive drab, gunmetal grey, navy and several camo patterns, including midnight camo and a Fred Bear camo edition made with Bear Archery.
The rest of the lineup covers different needs:
- Covert Ops Lightweight and Stealth Ops soft shells for a lower-profile look.
- 3-in-1 Spec Ops Soft Shell and All Weather 3-in-1 jackets for layering.
- Hard Shell Waterproof Jacket in black for steady rain.
- Soft Shell Tactical M-65 Field Jacket, the classic field jacket cut in modern fabric.
- Canvas Work Jacket in standard and lightweight weights.
- Lined Coaches Security Jacket, Reversible Hi-Visibility Uniform Jacket and a security-printed soft shell for guard and patrol staff.
A note for service members: commercial soft shells aren't the issue ECWCS soft shell, and camo patterns such as woodland or digital don't go with the OCP uniform. Wear these off duty and for training where your unit allows. The guide below explains the regulation side.
How to Choose Tactical Jackets
Decide how much weather protection you need and how hard you'll be moving in it.
Soft Shell Tactical Jackets
Soft shells are the all-rounders. They block wind, shed light rain and snow, and stretch with you, and they breathe better than a fully waterproof shell, so you sweat less when you're working. Pick the fleece-lined Special Ops for cold weather, the Covert Ops Lightweight for spring and fall, and the Stealth Ops if you want a cleaner exterior without as many visible tactical details.
3-in-1 Tactical Jackets
A 3-in-1 gives you an outer shell and an inner layer you can wear together or separately. It's the most flexible choice for travel or for weather that swings from frosty mornings to mild afternoons.
Hard Shell and Work Jackets
When you'll be standing in steady rain, a waterproof hard shell keeps you drier than any soft shell. Canvas work jackets trade weather technology for abrasion resistance, which suits farm, ranch and job-site work.
Security and Public Safety Jackets
Security-printed coaches jackets and soft shells identify guards and event staff at a glance, and the reversible hi-visibility uniform jacket gives you a bright side for traffic or night duty.
Tactical Jacket Features to Look For
- Ventilation: underarm zippers dump heat without opening the front.
- Hood: a stowable hood stays out of the way until the weather turns.
- Hook-and-loop panels: for unit patches, flags, ID and name tapes.
- Pocket access: chest and sleeve pockets stay reachable when you wear a pack or belt.
Sizing Tactical Jackets
Soft shells are cut closer than field jackets so they don't flap or snag. If you'll wear a fleece or heavy hoodie underneath, try them together or go up a size. Check the sleeve length with your arms stretched forward, as when shooting or driving, and make sure the hem covers your belt when you raise your arms.
Tactical Jackets and Military Regulations
For Army Soldiers, the issue soft shell is part of the ECWCS Generation III system, which includes a Level 5 soft shell jacket and trousers. DA PAM 670-1, paragraph 4-7f, allows Soldiers to wear ECWCS jackets as outer garments with the combat uniform when the commander authorizes it, and cold weather items worn with OCP need to be OCP pattern or a matching color.
Can You Wear a Commercial Soft Shell in Uniform?
The same pamphlet, at paragraph 4-7q, says anyone buying uniform items from commercial sources must make sure those items meet military specifications. Our Rothco tactical jackets are commercial designs, not ECWCS issue items, so treat them as off-duty, range and civilian outerwear. Black, woodland, midnight and urban patterns are clearly outside the OCP uniform. A coyote brown soft shell may look close, but your commander decides what's allowed, and unit policy can be stricter than the regulation. Air Force, Space Force, Marine and Navy personnel should check their own service's guidance.
Care Tips
Wash soft shells gently and skip fabric softener, which clogs the fabric and reduces its water resistance. Close all zippers and hook-and-loop panels before washing so they don't snag.
